Ethiopian Electric Power launches a portal website to enable beneficiaries & investors to donate money to the GERD.

Starting from the foundational days of GERD, it has been receiving the people’s support in various ways. From buying bonds to going to a bank to put some money down for the construction, contributing to the GERD has been filled with friction. Foreign donators of the GERD have struggled to contribute to the GERD since Ethiopia had no formalized online donation collecting system. www.mygerd.com is here to solve that problem. Since April 2011, when the cornerstone for the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) was laid, The Dam has benefited from the contributions of numerous Ethiopians in terms of resources, skills, and labor. However, contribution has been difficult for many Ethiopians who cannot physically contribute their resources due to the lack of a unified online platform. As a result, multiple GoFundMe accounts have been established, and some communities and individuals have had to travel long distances to donate to the dam’s construction. The exorbitant cost of wire transfers has deterred Ethiopians living outside their country from donating lesser sums as their financial circumstances allow. The goal of this online platform is to not only collect donations but also to present the most up-to-date information about GERD and project progress so that everyone can see how their donation is making a difference.
