The Ethiopian Customs Commission revealed that revenue from the just-finished 2020/2021 budget year was 112.5 billion Birr. The commission aimed to collect 125.5 billion Birr, but only managed to collect 112.5 billion, or 89.58 percent of the target. Commissioner Debele Kebeta stated that revenue has increased by 7.12 percent compared to the same period in the previous financial year. Coffee, flowers, khat, and other exports brought in more than 3 billion dollars in the previous fiscal year. According to the commissioner, activities such as the implementation of amended laws, regulations, various reform instruments, and technology-based practices have contributed to the effectiveness of revenue collection despite a number of obstacles the country has faced. During the budget year, the commission was able to save 37 billion Birr through contraband control efforts thanks to law enforcement measures, according to the commissioner.
