Ethio Telecom Set to Launch 5G Network Trial.

Title: Ethio Telecom took to conduct a trial for the 5G network for the first time in Ethiopia. 4G in Ethiopia was launched back in March 2015 with the help of Huawei, a Chinese company. However, due to heavy data traffic, Ethio Telecom decided to launch the 5G project a few months ago.

The final phase of this project (the trial run) is anticipated to start next week with Ethio Telecom’s head office and Bole International Airport surrounding area being the focus. Huawei is the main contractor that provided the network infrastructure and system enhancements to also execute the 5G project. The 5G network has been applied to the already available 4G infrastructure.

According to a report by Ericsson (a Swedish networking & telecommunications company), the Sub-Saharan African region has a less than 1% of mobile connections that are forecasted to grow to 7% by 2026. This 5G network is said to make Ethiopia one of the earl On average, a 4G network can be 10 Mb per second, while the 5G could offer 100MB per second. At top speed, 5G can be 20 times faster than the 4G LTE, with 1GB per second. Currently, Kenya and South Africa are the only African countries to implement the 5G network.
