The construction of the Berbera-Togochale road project is close to completion.

December 7, 2021

The Berbera-Togochale cross-boundary road project (234km) is 85% completed. It began in 2019 after receiving USD 400 million funding from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the United Kingdom (UK) and is forecasted to be completed by the end of 2022.

The construction has three parts left. The Berbera – Hargeisa road will be completed by April 2022, the road from Kalabaydh – Wuchale by July 2022, and the Hargeisa bypass will be completed by July 2022.

The load on Djibouti from Ethiopia is enormous since Ethiopia uses 90% for international trade. Therefore, by constructing the Berbera-Togochale road project, Somaliland will be a contender to Djibouti and Kenya.

After completion, trade volume between Ethiopia and Somaliland will increase by 30%. Somaliland aims to improve Ethiopia’s use of this port through construction and incorporating Ethiopia in the operation of the port.

Mohammed Ahmed Mohamoud, Ambassador of Somaliland to Ethiopia, stated that since Ethiopia is Somaliland’s main gate to the world, it aims to strengthen the two countries’ connection through this eminent infrastructure. There is a likelihood that Ethiopia will use Somaliland’s future ports conditional on the agreement.
