December 15, 2021

Born on January 15, 1995, Gotytom is an Ethiopian international long-distance runner who has competed since 2011. She had her debut marathon at the BMW Berlin Marathon on September 26, 2021, where she was the first woman to cross the finish line.

She has won the women’s 5000 m in the Meeting de Montreuil in 2016 and the girls’ 3000 meters event in the 2011 World Youth Championships in Athletics, both held in France. She has also won the bronze medal in the women’s 5000 meters event at the 2012 African Championships in Athletics held in Benin.

She participates in 2 miles, 3000 m, 5000 m, cross junior, half marathon, marathon, and cross-team event junior. She won the 2021 Berlin Marathon on September 26 at 2:20:09 but has surpassed this to 1:05:36 on Monday, December 13, 2021, at the Bahrain Royal International Night Half Marathon.

Gotytom was 11 seconds ahead of Kalkidan Gezahegne, racing for Bahrain. The race was intense, but despite her also racing with Kenya’s former world record-holder Ruth Chepngetich who had a 1:04:01 time in April in Istanbul, Gotytom achieved victory for herself and her country.
