Abrehot, a four-story modern public library & one of Africa’s top ten libraries, officially opens.

Abrehot officially opened on January 1 and is a significant way to uncover Ethiopia’s untold histories and facilitate ways to create wealth. Ethiopia is among the 18 countries worldwide and is the only African country with its own alphabet.

The library covers 19,000 square meters built with 1.15 billion ETB. It has a 1.5-kilometer shelf and can hold 1.4 million books. Abrehot contains over 240,000 electronic books and 300,000 research papers. It has space for more than 2,000 readers. It has sections for nursing mothers, parents to read with their children, children’s reading & playing areas, braille books for the blind, a modern cafeteria, meeting halls, an amphitheater, cafeteria, and space for 115 cars. It is located in 4 kilo on General Wingate Street, right before HiLCoE School of Computer Science and Technology.

Ethiopians need access to sufficient reading materials to gain & maintain literacy skills and learn about their country’s history. This library will allow this and enable readers to interact with each other, possibly creating flourishing through their love of books.
