The African Development Bank offers a $10 million grant from its Green Climate Fund for Liberia.

The African Development Bank offers a $10 million grant from its Green Climate Fund for Liberia. Each year, weather disasters cost the country nearly $6.17 million. This is expected to nearly double in the next ten years and triple by 2040.

The ADB aims to reinforce the country’s ability to produce tailored, sector-specific climate information services. This better equips Liberia for climate change mitigation & early warning, food & water security, and environmental protection.

The funding that will improve climate information services will allow Liberia to generate and distribute precise weather and climate information. There will be an understanding of how disaster losses happen and ways to evade them to save lives and stop economic losses.

Al Hamndou Dorsouma, the Bank’s Officer-In-Charge for Climate Change and Green Growth, stated that the project is part of the ADB’s dedication to helping countries in Africa improve their climate information system use, essential to assuring a green recovery.

The project will run for five years by the Environmental Protection Agency of Liberia. The Roberts International Airport will install weather instead and an unmanned aerial system for upper-air observation, fostering a connected community and national early warning systems.

2.3 million farmers and the coastal resident will be directly benefited, and nearly 5.4 million residents in the weather-dependent sector (including agriculture and energy production) will benefit directly.
