Rising Ethiopian star Yalemzerf Yehualaw shatters the women’s 10km road world record in Castellon, Spain, winning the World Athletics Label road race with a time of 29:14. Yalemzerf was born on August 3, 1999, and grew up in West Gojjam, where she started racing in school at only 12 years old.
She is an Ethiopian international athlete who won several track, road, and cross-country races. She won the 3000m and 5000m youth titles and was part of the Ethiopian Athletics Federation Academy system in Addis Ababa. Her 2017 coach Tessema Abshero told reporters that Yalemzerf had three-star qualities of speed, endurance, and good core strength that separated her from her fellow athlete.
She has received several international wins, such as ranking third place in the World Half Marathon Championships and first place in the All-African Games, breaking the world record at 1:10:26. She also won first place in the Delhi Half Marathon in 2020 and the Antrim Coast Half Marathon in 2021.
Before Castellon, her most recent win was the Great Ethiopian Run in January 2022. She is currently among the highest world ranking for Women’s Road Running, coming in 3rd place.
