Stephen is a 37-year-old long-distance runner who raced in the road, cross country, and tracks for over a decade. He began competing internationally in 2005, running in 10,000m and 5000m races. He won back-to-back South African universities titles for 2006 and 2007 and won his first global level medal, bronze, at the 2007 10,000m Summer Universiade.
He gained his first senior international selections in 2009 after completing the 2008 IAAF World Cross Country Championships and the 2008 IAAF World Half Marathon Championships. He was among a few runners to compete at the 2011 African Cross Country Championships and the World Championships event. He placed sixth in Africa fifteenth in the world.
In 2013, he ran both the 10,000m and half marathon at the Universiade and won a gold and a silver medal, respectively. In 2016, he won Durban’s 10,000m African Championships. Stephen also won the Granollers Half Marathon men’s race held in Spain in 2020. He is currently a 4-time medalist at the Summer Universiade and broke the 2022 50km men’s world record in Gqeberha, South Africa.
