Spotlight of the Week – The Ymer Brothers.

March 18, 2022

The Ymer Brothers, Mikael, and Elias Ymer are the top two Swedish/Ethiopian male Sweden tennis players in 2022. Mikael ranks as the number one men’s tennis player in Sweden with a world ranking of 83, while Elias, his older brother, takes up second place as the 136th world tennis player.

The Ymer Brothers were born in Skara, Sweden, to Ethiopian parents. Their mother, Kelem, is a physician and their father, Wondwosen, works at a dairy company. They have a younger brother named Rafael, a tennis player on the juniors’ circuit. Mikael and Elias have played Tennis since they were mid-teens. They began playing at the Good to Great Academy, founded by former world No 2 Magnus Norman. Mikael turned into a Tennis Pro Player in 2015, where he contested his first junior major final at the 2015 Wimbledon Championships, but he lost. Elias, the oldest child in the Ymer Family, started his career earlier than all of his siblings in 2013, where he made his ATP main draw singles debut at the 2013 Swedish Open. Mikael and Elias have been training partners since they joined their careers. In his interviews, Mikael was asked where their competitive streaks came from, and he responded by saying, “Yes, in everything, We trained every day, that I cannot deny. We competed very, very hard. Even today, as long as we don’t start fighting, he’s the best one to practice with because it gets very match-like.” The brothers continuously praise their dad for taking them to train and around tennis tournaments across Sweden while they were growing up.

Mikael and Elias Ymer reached the ATP final simultaneously on different continents; Mikael in Montpellier, France, and Elias in Pune, India. They produced high-quality Tennis and welcomed much-deserved success in 2022.
