Ethiopian Electric Power signs a deal with TBEA, a Chinese company, to purchase a $16.4 million GIS Switchgear for 3 years, the cost to be fully covered by EEP. The goal is to replace over sixty-five 15KV and 33KV transmission station GIS switchgear with new ones. Over six months, EEP will implement the first round of purchases to replace eighteen 15KV and twenty-six 33KV GIS switchgear. The remaining will be changed over the next two and half years.
EEP provides electricity to about three million Ethiopians. It aims to tackle the country’s constant power outage issue and decrease maintenance costs. It envisions Ethiopia to be self-reliant and has a vision of supplying electricity service to Ethiopia’s 100 million population. It is running several projects to achieve its goals, such as collaborating with international organizations to build power control centers, setting up dark fiber-optic infrastructure, exporting electric power, and more.
