Gold mining activities begin on 8 hectares of land in the Konso zone of the Southern Nations Nationalities and People’s (SNNP) regional state. The operation will employ and train nearly 100 youths. It will also contribute to the regional development of the two cooperative unions in Lehayite Kebele, Karat Woreda. The land contains the presence of gold, granite, and precious metals.
Gelgelo Gelsho, Deputy Administrator and Head of Trade & Market Development Department of Konso Zone, stated that the operation aims to create employment for local youth, strengthen gold mines, and supply gold to the global market. He added that it would rebrand the background of the Konso people in mining activities.
