Uganda’s Nation Media Group & Cancer Institute organize fundraising events to build a children’s cancer treatment center.

May 4, 2022

In Uganda, nearly 3,000 children get cancer every year, but less than 1,000 have access to treatment. Citizens also lack awareness about cancer in children and the available treatment options. To decrease the number of child deaths due to cancer, Uganda’s Nation Media Group & Cancer Institute collaborated to organize fundraising events to build a children’s cancer treatment center. The NMG-U and UCI aim to collect a minimum of Shs 3 billion ($842,757) to construct the facility.

So far, a car-washing event was held in Wakiso District where customers were charged Shs 50,000. There were also announcements on digital platforms to raise funds and create awareness about children’s cancers. All NMG platforms have mobile money numbers and account numbers ready to receive funds. Ms. Mary Karooro Okurut, the senior presidential advisor on public relations, stated that she understands how devastating cancer is and applauds the efforts taken. She also called upon the people to contribute to the cause.
