The Ethiopian Telecom License holder Safaricom Ethiopia, wins the World Bank Group’s Partnerships Award 2022 in the Best Utilities Project category. The Partnerships Awards selects the industry’s best based on impact on the country’s development, diligence, & transparency. Safaricom is part of the Global Partnerships for Ethiopia (GPE), consisting of Vodafone, Vodacom, Safaricom PLC, Sumitomo Group, and CDC Group PLC.
The GPE granted the telecom license to Safaricom Ethiopia to provide quality services for its residents and boost the Ethiopian economy. In addition, the GPE preferred Safaricom for its vast experience in the sector. GPE aims to increase the sector’s investment to $8 billion and provide 1.5 million jobs for locals.
The Partnerships Award selected Safaricom for its contribution through job creation and enhanced telecommunications services. It also created competition in the telecommunication service sector, increased internet usage, digital transformations, and socio-economic growth. It’s promoting investments with a minimum of $8.5 billion over ten years, the greatest Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the country’s history. Safaricom’s strategy consists of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and allows quick mobile penetration to support Ethiopia’s education, education, agriculture, health, trade, and industry sector.
