The Green Legacy initiative, created in 2019, plans to reduce Ethiopia’s climate change effects and deforestation. It has planted 18 billion trees in 3 years, surpassing its 4-year target of 10 billion. On June 22, 2022, the Green Legacy initiative’s tree-planting campaign will plant over 6.3 billion seedlings to reach 25 billion trees and 30% forest coverage by 2030.
The Green Legacy initiative’s focuses are supporting agriculture, protecting & cleaning water, preserving biodiversity, preserving wildlife, improving health, climate sequester, mitigation, & adaptation, building resilience, and advancing social capital. Its mission is to plant trees in Ethiopia’s cities and rural areas to improve forest benefits for social and ecological goals. The key regions include Addis Ababa, Dire Dawa, Harari, Oromia, Somali, Tigray, Amhara, Afar, Benishangul-Gumuz, Gambela, and SNNP.
The upcoming tree-planting campaign is the country’s fourth & final year of the initiative to plant different types of trees, some with fruit. The Ministry of Agriculture now focuses on creating follow-up & nurturing mechanisms for the planted trees and a combined forest-farm system to sustain and increase forest coverage. Ethiopia aims to be a green society to combat environmental degradation in several regions all over the country.
