Turkana County plans to start manufacturing its medical supplies

May 27, 2022

Turkana County is one of Kenya’s largest counties located in the former Rift Valley Province of the country. It is Kenya’s poorest region but recently increased its mineral, oil, and water resources. The county announced plans to manufacture medical supplies, mainly sanitizers and detergents, to fulfill medical supplies demand. The goal is to decrease costs and an over-dependence on the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA).

Residents faced a medical supplies shortage because KEMSA delayed shipments and restricted county hospitals purchasing outside Kenya. This forced locals to buy expensive medical products from private clinics and pharmacies. After receiving clearance from the Public Health Laboratory, the Health Products & Technologies Unit (HPTU) will begin its operations to fulfill medical supply demands and increase other health products’ procurement. Turkana’s HPTU will manufacture the supplies with its qualified technical workforce. In addition, it will work with USAID and other partners to close the medical supplies demand gap.
