Menelik II Referral Hospital is Ethiopia’s first hospital known for tertiary eye care and forensic medicine. The hospital aims to provide a wide range of services by opening surgical, medical, pediatric, and maternity units in the coming years. It recently inaugurated a Dialysis Center with the help of the Addis Ababa City Administration (AACA) and AB Medical Center, U.S.-based, to increase dialysis services in public hospitals by treating 90 patients a day, five times more than previous. AACA aims to enhance access to affordable health care and turn Addis Ababa into a medical tourism hub.
For the last two years, the AACA has provided free dialysis services for locals who couldn’t afford them for the past two years. To subsidize this, it granted ETB 24 million. The Administration plans to build more sophisticated health facilities consisting of three hospitals. In addition, it intends to encourage private sector investment by providing them 24 to build new dialysis facilities.
