The Global Mercy is the world’s largest hospital ship, part of a fleet owned by Mercy Ships. It is an organization operating since 1978 that provides medical services in regions where healthcare access is challenging. It is equipped with the latest CT technology and provides medical training and technical installation. The goal is to provide more access to healthcare for people in impoverished areas.
It’s 12 stories high with 6 operating rooms, 102 acute care beds, 7 intensive care beds, 90 convalescent beds, and 600 volunteers, from medical professionals to technicians and trainers who provide dental care, eye care, and nutrition training. The aim is to provide quality healthcare with diagnostics, surgery, and medical training to improve the lives of 150,000 people living in remote areas.
The Global Mercy arrived at the port of Dakar to train 260 Senegalese healthcare professionals for 4 weeks to improve the country’s healthcare system. The ship will return to the country in early 2023 to provide additional training and surgery, including maxillofacial & reconstructive surgery, tumor removal, cleft lip & palate repair, obstetric fistula repair, and other procedures.
