Ethiopia’s Walia Ibex beats Egypt 2-0 in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers

The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) or TotalEnergies AFCON is Africa’s most important international men’s association football tournament held every two years. It was formed in 1957 under the Confederation of African Football (CAF), in which Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia were the only countries to compete in the inaugural tournament. Egypt has won the AFCON six times, while Ethiopia only won once in 1962. On Thursday, June 9, 2022, Ethiopia’s Walia Ibex beats Egypt 2-0 in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers at the Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe, Malawi. Dawa Hotessa and Captain Shemeles Bekele sealed Ethiopia’s victory with goals in the first half of the match. Dawa Hotessa scored the first goal in the first 21 minutes, and Shemeles Bekele scored the second goal five minutes before halftime. Ethiopia is at the top of the AFCON Qualification Group D list with a better goal difference, followed by Malawi, Guinea, and Egypt, with three points each.

Ethiopia’s team contains talented players giving the team a marketing value of $1.78 million. Shimlis Beckley is the most valuable player with 54 international matches since 2010. He played 2 AFCON matches, 24 AFCON qualifiers, and 20 World Cup qualifiers. In addition, the Walia Ibex includes Abubeker Nassir (Ethiopian Bunna Club star striker), Gatush Banu (St. George Team star player), Yared Bayeh (Ethiopian club Fasil Kenema player), and Fasil Gebremichel (goalkeeper of this team and Sebeta Kenema club).
