The Global Confederation of Higher Education Associations for Agricultural and Life Sciences (GCHERA) selects Professor Mitiku Haile as one of the two laureates for the 2021 World Agriculture Prize. The GCHERA is a global network of national and regional Higher Education Associations. The award recognizes exceptional agriculture, life science education, and scientific research achievements. The prize supports higher education institutions’ missions in developing education, research, innovation, agriculture, and life sciences. Professor Mitiku was chosen for his contribution to developing educational institutions, human capacity, and dedication to sustainability.
Mitiku Haile, Ph.D., is a Soil Science and Sustainable Land Management Professor in the College of Dryland Agriculture and Natural Resources (CoDANR) at Mekelle University with 30 years of experience in leadership roles. He was the first President and Founding Father of Mekelle University. In addition, he has provided significant leadership in multiple international and national organizations. He is also a valuable member of Prolinnova (Promoting Local Innovation In Ecological Agriculture And Natural Resource Management), a Global Partnership Programme of the Global Forum on Agricultural Research (GFAR).
