The DT4A Innovation Challenge aims to support organizations and initiatives, ranging from private companies, universities, and NGOs, contributing to improving the transportation sector through sustainable and equitable results using open data. The initiative is led by World Resource Institute (WRI) and partners to look for innovations that will boost Africa’s transportation sector. It recently announced its four winners for the first-ever DT4A Innovation Challenge from Côte d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, South Africa, and Sudan. The DT4A awards its winners $30,000 to implement an initiative for a new transit system by June 2023.
YeneGuzo, by AddisMap, is a mobile application that provides different transport options for transport service providers and riders. Its working language is Amharic and uses a minimal interface that allows easy access to as many riders as possible. It is made from the open-source Trufi application and OpenStreetMap data with the Ethiopian Ministry of Transport and Logistics. AddisMap plans to increase YeneGuzo’s visibility by adding several modes, executing a vast data collection & editing campaign, enhancing public relations & training materials, and launching a communications campaign.
