Zelalem Merga was born in Addis Ababa in 1989, where he currently resides and works. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design. He draws inspiration from his surroundings, and his stories are told through them, which encourages him to be creative. He mainly focuses on being inspired by what he sees.
Zelalem Merga is a fortunate man. He discovered his talent while studying economics and immediately shifted his focus to becoming an artist. Zelalem Merga is a multidisciplinary artist who creates one-of-a-kind artworks from waste materials in order to contribute to the cleanliness of his surroundings. His first foray into the art world as a child was to scribble in class, copying portraits from books. Despite their concerns about the difficult conditions in the art world, his parents, particularly his mother, were the first to see his work, support him, and bestow their blessings on him. They encouraged the young artist to pursue his artistic passion. Above all, he values his mother’s love and encouragement, which aided his decision to pursue a career as an artist and for which he is grateful. “I am a multidisciplinary Ethiopian artist based in Addis Abeba. As a pan-Africanist and environmentalist, I use waste to create one-of-a-kind art pieces.”He draws inspiration from his surroundings, allowing him to be creative with what he sees. The amazing thing is that he not only sees beautiful things but also what can be made from discarded, neglected waste materials. Through more than nine group exhibitions, he has shown his work from Addis Ababa to Mainz in Germany. His most recent exhibition was at Zellan Creative Center in Addis Ababa.
Amongst his exhibitions, Zellan Creative Center in 2020, The Grind Show in Alliance Ethio-Francaise in 2019, and The Nala Internation art exhibition in Mainz, Germany in 2017 are some of the recent group exhibitions.
