ROPHNAN becomes the first Ethiopian artist to sign a contract with Universal Music Group (UMG)

UMG is a Dutch-American multinational music corporation that is the world’s biggest music company. Along with Sony Music and Warner Music Group, it is one of the “”Big Three”” record labels. UMG was listed among the Top 50 most innovative companies worldwide that own multiple record labels and signed artists like Bob Marley, Eminem, Marvin Gaye, and more. The company recently signed ROPHNAN as its first Ethiopian artist.

ROPHNAN is an Ethiopian musician, Dj, singer, songwriter, and audio engineer. He is one of the most influential artists and a pioneer of electronic music in Ethiopia. He began his career at age 16 when he released a mix tape that got him into the Ethiopian club spotlight. He released three hit albums, Reflection, SOST, and his latest Sidist VI. SOST was a massive success, with over 2 million views within a week of its release, while Sidist VI has over 240k on average in 4 days. He even has a trending hashtag called the “”Rophside,”” a side view picture that resembles the album art and Rophnan’s favorite picture pose, derived from the long tradition of Ethiopian emperors and rulers posing in profile, became an internet sensation.
