Letesenbet Gidey breaks the women’s 10,000m record

Letesenbet Gidey breaks the women’s 10,000m record at the World Athletics Championship, her first globe title. She was born on March 20, 1998, in Endameske, Tigray, Ethiopia. She has two older brothers & an older sister who grew up on their family’s farm. Her running career began in 2014 when she ran the 5000m at the Ethiopian Championships and won third place. Since then, Letesenbet has been competing in track, cross-country, and road running.

She is a part of the NN Running Team, a Netherland-based professional running team that consists of some of the world’s most accomplished distance runners. She won several medals and is the first woman since Ingrid Kristiansen from 1986–1993 to hold world records for 500m and 10,000m simultaneously. She has 4 world records for 5000m, 10,000m, & half-marathon and is a 2-time World Cross Country champion.
