Tewolde Gebremariam receives the Airlines Business Award at the Airline Strategy Awards. FlightGlobal’s award ceremony honors individuals, airlines, and companies supporting air travel and has proved dynamic leadership and a clear vision. Tewolde was recognized for his leadership in various disciplines, from crisis management to long-term strategic planning. He joined the airline in 1985, serving in different managerial positions until he rose to CEO from 2011 -2022.
Under Tewolde’s leadership, Ethiopian Airlines rose to the top African airline and increased its annual turnover from $1 billion to $4.5 billion, grew passengers from 3 million to 12 million, and aircraft from 33 to 130. He also facilitated infrastructure enhancements worth over $700 million, including MRO facilities, a cargo terminal, and an aviation academy equipped with full-flight simulators. In addition, he also facilitated the construction of the Ethiopian Skylight Hotel.
