GIZ equips 10 health centers with Solar photovoltaic (PV)

April 25, 2022

GIZ equips ten health centers in the Amhara, Oromia, SNNP, and Sidama regions with Solar photovoltaic (PV). This project is part of its Green People’s Energy Initiative, launched in 2019. The initiative’s objective is to support the development of decentralized renewable energy systems in Africa’s rural communities and encourage local stakeholders and private investors’ participation. The regional bureaus of Ethiopia’s Federal Ministry of Water and Energy (MoWE) selected these remote off-grid health institutions.

The energy system ensures constant electricity, enabling the centers to provide different medical services. This allows uninterrupted childbirth or emergency surgeries and 24/7 cooling for heat-sensitive medicines. In addition, the availability of solar power in the ten regions will allow electric laboratory equipment to be fully operational and reduce the number of deaths due to lack of electricity.
